This dictionary proposes an understanding of the Portuguese language, in its varieties, European and Brazilian, and geographical variants, in the so-called lusophone world, as a dynamic transnational linguistic and cultural system. Suggests a decentralised view of the language and aims at deconstructing the notion of the hierarchy of European and Brazilian Portuguese as a language of prestige and majoritarian elites.

The language we speak and write, as José Saramago stated, is plural:  “there is not one Portuguese language, there are languages in Portuguese”, which vary and present peculiar characteristics in each geographical place and each individual belonging to specific language communities. In most cases, around these places not only identities are constructed, but influences continue to intersect in a network that goes beyond the spoken language. In this project, we invite you to discover some of these characteristics. Let’s do it together, shall we?

Este dicionário propõe uma compreensão da língua portuguesa, nas suas variedades, europeia e brasileira, e variantes geográficas, no chamado mundo lusófono, como um sistema linguístico e cultural transnacional dinâmico. Sugere uma visão descentralizada da língua e visa desconstruir a noção da hierarquia do português europeu e brasileiro como língua de prestígio e de elites maioritárias.

A língua que falamos e escrevemos, tal como José Saramago afirmou, é plural: “não há uma língua portuguesa, há línguas em português”, que varia e apresenta características peculiares em cada ponto geográfico e em cada indivíduo pertencente a comunidades linguísticas específicas. Na maioria dos casos, em torno destes lugares constroem-se identidades e cruzam-se redes de influência que ultrapassam a língua. Neste projecto, convidamo-lo a descobrir algumas destas características. Vamos fazê-lo juntos?

The online publication of this Decolonized Dictionary of the Portuguese Language may raise some discussion by departing from the canon and the conventional content of a work of this kind. Its title carries not only the expression of the sociolinguistic meaning in close connection with the socio-historical process but also the metaphorical value of emancipation from the norm. This compilation of lexical terms, the result of a demanding and continuous task, presents unique particularities that may make it as captivating as polemical. The ethnolinguistic value it reveals is underlined by how the exposition of the meaning of the recorded terms is organised.

A publicação online deste Dicionário Descolonizado da Língua Portuguesa poderá suscitar alguma discussão ao afastar-se do cânone e do conteúdo convencional de uma obra deste género. O seu título transporta em si, para além da expressão do sentido sociolinguístico em íntima conexão com o processo socio-histórico, este valor metafórico de emancipação da norma. Com efeito, esta compilação de termos lexicais, resultado uma tarefa exigente e contínua, apresenta particularidades especiais que a podem tornar tão cativante quanto polémica. O valor etnolinguístico que revela é sublinhada pelo modo como é organizada a exposição do significado dos termos registados.
